Overview

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek — often called the Balcony Trek, because Poon Hill sits like a viewing balcony above the Kali Gandaki valley — is the trek that introduced most of the world to Nepal. It remains the best short trek in the country for anyone who wants genuine Himalayan scenery without high-altitude risk or serious physical demand. The sunrise from Poon Hill at 3,210m is the reason people come. From a single open hilltop you look across at Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre — two eight-thousanders in one view, lighting up in sequence as the sun clears the eastern ridges. The trekking itself is comfortable. Days are four to six hours, teahouses are well-established with hot showers and good food, and the maximum altitude is low enough that altitude sickness is very unlikely. The famous stone staircase up to Ulleri — roughly 3,300 steps — is the hardest part of the whole route. March and April transform this trek. The trail between Ulleri, Ghorepani and Tadapani runs through one of Nepal's densest rhododendron forests, and when the national flower is in bloom the entire hillside turns red and pink. The descent through Ghandruk, a large and beautifully maintained Gurung village with its own museum, closes the loop. This is our recommended trek for families with children over eight, for trekkers over sixty, and for anyone whose first question is "will I be able to do it?".

Best Time to Trek

The most reliable season. Clear skies, stable weather, firm trails and the sharpest mountain views of the year. Book early; this is peak season on every route.

The second-best window and the finest season for scenery below 4,000m, when rhododendron forests are in full bloom. Warmer nights and longer days, with some afternoon haze building through May.

Clear, quiet and cold. Excellent for lower routes such as Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Kathmandu Valley. High passes may close under snow.

Wet and leech-prone on most routes, but this is the right season for the rain-shadow trails: Upper Mustang, Nar Phu and Upper Dolpo.

Yes. We regularly run this trek with children from around eight years old. Porters can carry children's packs and we adjust the daily stages for family groups.

Poon Hill stands as an isolated open hilltop above the Ghorepani ridge, projecting out over the Kali Gandaki valley like a balcony — giving an unobstructed panorama across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.

Mid-March to late April, with the peak usually in the first two weeks of April at Ghorepani's elevation. Lower sections bloom earlier.
