The Khumbu is the highest-profile trekking region on earth, and it earns the reputation. From the airstrip at Lukla the trails run up through Namche Bazaar, past Tengboche monastery with Ama Dablam framed behind it, and onto the glacial moraine below the Khumbu Icefall where every Everest expedition since 1953 has begun.

There is more here than the Base Camp trail. The Gokyo valley to the west holds six glacial lakes and the longest glacier in the Himalaya, with a summit view from Gokyo Ri that takes in Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu at once. Link the valleys with the Renjo La, Cho La and Kongma La passes and you have the Three Passes circuit — the most complete trek in the Khumbu.

Everest routes need a Sagarmatha National Park permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Lukla flights are weather-dependent and often operate from Ramechhap in peak season; we tell you that at booking, not on the morning of the flight.
