Overview
Lower Mustang gives you the Tibetan-plateau landscape of Mustang without the USD 500 restricted-area permit and without the sixteen-day commitment. In eight days you fly into Jomsom, walk the Kali Gandaki — the deepest gorge on earth, measured from the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri summits that flank it — and reach Muktinath at 3,800m. Muktinath is one of the few sites sacred to Hindus and Tibetan Buddhists alike. Hindus know it as Mukti Kshetra, the place of liberation, and pilgrims bathe under all 108 water spouts that run along the temple wall. Buddhists know it as Chumig Gyatsa, and revere the natural gas flame burning over water inside the Jwala Mai shrine. Kagbeni is the other highlight — a compact medieval village of mud-brick alleys, a red 15th-century gompa and irrigation channels, sitting at the gateway to Upper Mustang. Standing at the checkpost north of the village, looking up the Kali Gandaki into restricted territory, is one of the most atmospheric moments available on a short Nepal trek. The return leg through Marpha adds apple orchards, whitewashed Thakali houses and Nepal's best apple brandy. Thakali food, served all along this valley, is widely considered the finest regional cuisine in the country. Like Upper Mustang, this route is in the rain shadow and works well during monsoon.

Best Time to Trek
The most reliable season. Clear skies, stable weather, firm trails and the sharpest mountain views of the year. Book early; this is peak season on every route.
The second-best window and the finest season for scenery below 4,000m, when rhododendron forests are in full bloom. Warmer nights and longer days, with some afternoon haze building through May.
Clear, quiet and cold. Excellent for lower routes such as Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Kathmandu Valley. High passes may close under snow.
Wet and leech-prone on most routes, but this is the right season for the rain-shadow trails: Upper Mustang, Nar Phu and Upper Dolpo.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Lower Mustang — Jomsom, Kagbeni, Muktinath, Marpha — sits outside the restricted zone and needs only ACAP and TIMS. The restricted area begins at the checkpost just north of Kagbeni.
They operate in the early morning only, because the Kali Gandaki wind becomes dangerous by mid-morning. Cancellations for weather are common. Always build a buffer day before your international flight; we can also arrange the jeep route via Beni if flights are grounded.
Yes — a road now reaches Muktinath and jeeps run from Jomsom. We include it as a trek because the walking route via Jhong and Lubra is far more rewarding than the road, but we can adapt for trekkers with mobility limits or pilgrims travelling with elders.
Yes. It is one of the best monsoon treks in Nepal — the valley is in rain shadow and stays largely dry while the rest of the country is under monsoon.
