Trekkers who walked the Annapurna Circuit before the road usually say the Manaslu Circuit is what Annapurna used to be. That is a fair summary, but it is not the whole comparison.
The pass
Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit is 5,416m. Larke La on Manaslu is 5,106m. Thorong La is therefore the higher and colder crossing — a 1,000m ascent from around 4am followed by a 1,600m descent to Muktinath. Larke La is lower but the approach days are longer and the lodges more basic.
Roads
This is the real difference. Roads now reach Manang and Muktinath on the Annapurna side. Any operator who does not tell you this is being dishonest. Our Annapurna Circuit itinerary drives the affected lower sections and walks the high alternatives — Upper Pisang to Ghyaru to Ngawal, and the trails above the Kali Gandaki — so you still get eleven days of real trail. Manaslu has no road along the route at all.
Permits and access
Annapurna needs only ACAP and TIMS, and you can arrange it at short notice. Manaslu is a restricted area: a government permit, a licensed guide and a minimum of two trekkers are mandatory by law, with MCAP and ACAP on top. That is exactly why Manaslu stays quiet.
Lodges
Annapurna teahouses are well-established, with menus, hot showers and Wi-Fi at most stops. Manaslu lodges are clean but simpler, particularly above Namrung, where charging and Wi-Fi are paid extras and often unavailable. Bring a good sleeping bag.
Emergency options
Annapurna has road access at multiple points to bail out on. Manaslu has far less infrastructure in an emergency — which is part of why it feels wilder, and part of why we grade it slightly harder.
Which one
First long circuit, or you want variety and comfort: the 15-day Annapurna Circuit, which passes through more ecological and cultural zones than any comparable trek on earth. Already done a long Himalayan trek and want the quiet version: the 14-day Manaslu Circuit. Want cultural depth on top: add the sealed Tibetan Buddhist enclave of Tsum on the 19-day Manaslu and Tsum Valley Trek.
The two also join up. Manaslu exits at Dharapani, directly on the Annapurna Circuit trail — continuing over Thorong La makes a 24 to 26 day route.
