Overview

The Khopra Danda Trek is the answer for trekkers who want the Annapurna region without the Annapurna crowds. It branches off the Poon Hill trail at Ghorepani and climbs a long grassy ridge to Khopra Danda at 3,660m — a single community lodge sitting on an exposed spur with an uninterrupted view straight into the south face of Dhaulagiri, one of the great mountain walls of the Himalaya. The Khopra ridge is unusual because you are not looking at mountains across a valley; you are level with the ridgelines, walking a spine with Annapurna South and Hiunchuli on one side and the Kali Gandaki gorge dropping four thousand metres to the west. On clear mornings the whole Dhaulagiri massif fills the horizon from Dhaulagiri I through Tukuche Peak. From Khopra, strong trekkers can make the demanding day return to Khayer Lake at 4,660m — a sacred glacial lake beneath Annapurna South, visited by Hindu pilgrims each August. It is a 1,000m ascent and back in a single day, and it is the hardest thing on this itinerary, but it takes you higher than Annapurna Base Camp. The lodges along this route are run by the Community Lodge management committees of the villages themselves, meaning your money stays in Swanta, Chistibung and Khopra rather than leaving the valley. For trekkers who care where their spending lands, this is one of the best-structured routes in Nepal.

Highlights

  • The closest and clearest view of Dhaulagiri's south face available on any teahouse trek
  • Community-owned lodges — trekking spend goes directly to local villages
  • Optional ascent to sacred Khayer Lake at 4,660m beneath Annapurna South
  • Combines Poon Hill sunrise with a genuinely off-the-beaten-path ridge
  • Far quieter than ABC or Poon Hill — often only a handful of trekkers at Khopra
  • Traditional Magar villages at Swanta and Chistibung

Best Time to Trek

The most reliable season. Clear skies, stable weather, firm trails and the sharpest mountain views of the year. Book early; this is peak season on every route.

The second-best window and the finest season for scenery below 4,000m, when rhododendron forests are in full bloom. Warmer nights and longer days, with some afternoon haze building through May.

Clear, quiet and cold. Excellent for lower routes such as Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Kathmandu Valley. High passes may close under snow.

Wet and leech-prone on most routes, but this is the right season for the rain-shadow trails: Upper Mustang, Nar Phu and Upper Dolpo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Moderate overall, but harder than Poon Hill. The climb from Swanta to Khopra Danda is a sustained 1,400m gain, and the optional Khayer Lake day is genuinely strenuous — 1,000m up and back at altitude.

No, it is optional. Trekkers who skip it use Day 7 as a rest and descent day. Those who attempt it should start before 5am and be prepared to turn back if weather closes in.

Rarely. Even in peak October it typically sees a fraction of the traffic on the ABC and Poon Hill routes. Accommodation at Khopra is limited to the community lodge, so we book ahead.

Nights at 3,660m on an exposed ridge are cold — expect below freezing from November. Bring a sleeping bag rated to -15°C; blankets are available but limited.
