Overview
Ruby Valley sits in the gap between the Langtang and Manaslu regions, beneath the Ganesh Himal range, and takes its name from the ruby and crystal deposits mined in the hills around Somdang. It is one of the last genuinely untouched trekking routes within a day's drive of Kathmandu — no lodges built for foreigners, no teahouse strip, and often no other trekkers at all. The trek runs through Tamang country. Villages like Gatlang and Tipling are built in tight clusters of stone and timber houses with slate roofs, and you stay in homestays and small community lodges rather than commercial teahouses. Tamang culture here is Tibetan Buddhist with strong Bön and shamanic elements, and if your timing is right you may see a Tamang Selo performance or a village festival. The high point is Pangsang Pass at 3,842m, an open grassy saddle rather than a rocky col, and the view from it is disproportionate to the effort involved: Ganesh Himal directly above, Manaslu to the west, Langtang Lirung to the east, and the Annapurna range visible on clear days. Few 3,800m viewpoints in Nepal deliver three separate massifs at once. Because Ruby Valley is not a restricted area, permits are simple and costs are low. Because it has no road access along most of the route, it remains genuinely remote despite being close to Kathmandu. This is the trek we recommend for people who have done Poon Hill or Langtang and want something that still feels undiscovered without committing three weeks or a USD 500 permit.

Best Time to Trek
The most reliable season. Clear skies, stable weather, firm trails and the sharpest mountain views of the year. Book early; this is peak season on every route.
The second-best window and the finest season for scenery below 4,000m, when rhododendron forests are in full bloom. Warmer nights and longer days, with some afternoon haze building through May.
Clear, quiet and cold. Excellent for lower routes such as Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Kathmandu Valley. High passes may close under snow.
Wet and leech-prone on most routes, but this is the right season for the rain-shadow trails: Upper Mustang, Nar Phu and Upper Dolpo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Because of the ruby and crystal deposits mined in the hills around Somdang, which have been worked on a small scale for generations. You pass the mining area on Day 4.
No restricted-area permit is required — only a TIMS card and local municipality permits, all included in our package. This makes Ruby Valley one of the most affordable off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal.
Homestays and small community lodges rather than commercial teahouses. Rooms are simple, food is what the village cooks, and hot showers are rare. This is the trade-off for a genuinely uncommercialised route.
It can be, for trekkers who are comfortable with basic accommodation and don't need the reassurance of a well-trafficked trail. If you want lodges, menus and other trekkers around, choose Poon Hill or Langtang instead.
