Trekking in the Ganesh Himal
Ganesh Himal sits in the gap between the Langtang and Manaslu regions and sees a tiny fraction of their traffic. The Ruby Valley trail through it takes its name from the ruby and crystal deposits mined in the hills around Somdang, and it is one of the last genuinely untouched trekking routes within a day's drive of Kathmandu — no lodges built for foreigners, no teahouse strip, and often no other trekkers at all. This is Tamang country. Villages like Gatlang and Tipling are built in tight clusters of stone and timber houses with slate roofs, and you stay in homestays and small community lodges rather than commercial teahouses. The high point is Pangsang Pass at 3,842m, an open grassy saddle whose view is disproportionate to the effort involved: Ganesh Himal directly above, Manaslu to the west, Langtang Lirung to the east, and the Annapurna range visible on clear days. No restricted-area permit is required, which keeps costs low.
