Pokhara sits at 820m on the shore of Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range rising almost eight thousand metres directly behind it — one of the shortest horizontal distances from lake to 8,000m summit anywhere on earth. On a clear morning the whole wall of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna III and IV and Lamjung Himal reflects in the water.

Sarangkot at 1,592m is the centrepiece: you drive up in darkness and watch the Annapurna range light from the summits down while the valley below stays in shadow and mist. It is one of the great Himalayan sunrises and requires no trekking at all.

Pokhara is also Nepal's adventure capital. Paragliding from Sarangkot, with Himalayan thermals and lake landings, is among the best commercial flying sites in the world. Most people use the city as a launch point for Annapurna treks — it is worth three days in its own right.
